What is the mixed models controversy ? : reply to J . A . Nelder Viviana

چکیده
We begin by apologizing for the lamentable omission of Professor Nelder’s interesting and controversial papers both in Lencina, Singer and Stanek (2005) and in Lencina and Singer (2006). Although the focus of our papers is much narrower than that of his articles, we feel that any manuscript touching the topic of parametrization and definition of hypotheses in linear mixed models should necessarily refer to his numerous contributions to this field. Essentially, we compare two stochastic models [one with constrained parameters, denoted CP and the other with unconstrained parameters, denoted UP by Voss (1999)] that are extensively employed to analyze data from balanced experiments with a fixed and a random factor. The two models generate different test statistics presumably directed at the same hypothesis, namely that of the nonexistence of the random factor main effect in the presence of the interaction. Differing opinions over which statistic should be used is what we call the “mixed model controversy” following Voss (1999). Our objective is to provide an answer to this very specific question. To retain this focus, we do not discuss the general issue of model building or add to a debate over the reasonableness of the hypothesis under investigation. We explicitly state this in the abstract of Lencina, Singer and Stanek (2005).

What is the Mixed - Models Controversy ? From :
Two papers have recently been published in this journal which purport to deal with the mixedmodels controversy (Lencina et al., 2005; Lencina & Singer, 2006, to be referred to as L1 and L2). In my view they do not represent the current state of thinking on this subject. My own work begins with Nelder (1977) and continues with papers in 1982, and particularly with Nelder (1994, 1995). Further pa...
متن کاملMuch ado about nothing: the mixed models controversy revisited
We consider a well-known controversy that stems from the use of two mixed models for the analysis of balanced experimental data with a fixed and a random factor. It essentially originates in the different statistics developed from such models for testing that the variance parameter associated to the random factor is null. The corresponding hypotheses are interpreted as that of null random facto...
متن کاملMeasure for measure: exact F tests and the mixed models controversy
We consider exact F tests for the hypothesis of null random factor effect in the presence of interaction under the two factor mixed models involved in the mixed models controversy. We show that under the constrained parameter (CP) model, even in unbalanced data situations, MSB/MSE (in the usual ANOV A notation) follows an exact F distribution when the null hypothesis holds. We also obtain an ex...
متن کاملReply to “A Critical Review of Proximal Fibular Osteotomy for Knee Osteoarthritis”
Proximal fibular osteotomy is a surgical procedure that has evoked significant interest and controversy in the recent past. Vaishya et al have made a significant effort in compiling the available evidence on the topic. However, we would like to make some significant suggestions and additions to the findings in their manuscript.
